Saunton Beach

The Beach

Christie Devon Estate owns and manages Saunton beach, one of North Devon’s best known seaside spots. Well used by locals and visitors to the region, the 3.5 mile long sandy beach within the North Devon Biosphere, is renowned for its excellent water quality and easy rider waves.

Christie’s manages this beautiful corner of North Devon with a focus on preserving the unique character of the setting. The estate owns the land and a number of properties in the area and is landlord to a number of independent businesses that operate from the beach.

Easily accessible with amenities, shops and cafes and dog friendly areas the beach is a popular family destination. Saunton beach is also a familiar stop for many of the surfers who visit North Devon, particularly long boarders, and the relaxed waves make it an ideal place to learn to surf.

Saunton beach extends to Crow Point in the south and is flanked by the sand dunes of Braunton Burrows along its length. It is at low tide that one can fully appreciate the epic scale of the beach, with a half mile walk from the dunes to the water’s edge.

Popular to visit year round, each season brings out Saunton’s distinctive charms; from sandcastles, rock pooling and sunset walks of Spring/Summer to big skies, empty space and Atlantic swells pummeling the North Devon shore in Autumn/Winter.

Over the years, Saunton has provided a scenic backdrop for movies including Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Edge of Tomorrow and music videos from Robbie Williams and Olly Murs. Home to Saunton Beach Lifesaving Club, the beach is regularly used for events from surf competitions to D-day celebrations.

The car park is run by Saunton Beach Enterprises which also manages the Saunton Villas holiday chalets. Hot and cold food, from snacks to fine dining is provided by Saunton Break café and The Beachside Grill restaurant.

A number of Saunton beach based businesses cater for making the most of the beach, including surf hire from Surfed out, lessons from Walking on Waves and Surf South West and beach hut and deckchair hire from Jules. Contact details can be found in the Facilities section on this page and more information is available on our Associated Businesses page.
